Social Studies 1B - Identity and Community

SAM1022
This subject gives an introduction to various social science perspectives on the relationship between individuals and society. We explore the meaning of power, social background and class, inclusion and exclusion. You will learn different didactic approaches.

KNOWLEDGE

The student

  • Has knowledge of how people create different forms of interaction and community, with particular emphasis on childhood and adolescence
  • Has insight into how social background and distribution of resources and power impacts issues such as inclusion and exclusion, participation and conflict
  • Has knowledge of social science theories on multicultural societies and racism

SKILLS

The student can

  • Present and summarize social science research on modern Norway
  • Apply social science terms to discuss key societal challenges
  • Teach about and in multicultural societies using different approaches from social science didactics

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student can

  • Give and receive feedback on social science texts 
  • Collaborate with and use the local community as an arena for learning
  • Identify and analyze key social science questions in the subject
Semester fee and literature. Costs must be assumed in connection with travel to and from internship. Nord University provides grants for travel expenses according to current regulations. See the internship information page for more information.
Elective

Lectures, group work, student presentations.

Submissions: There are two work assignments (AK) during the semester.

Evaluation using mid-term and final surveys. Students are also encouraged to participate in the central quality surveys.

Composite assessment (SV) - All part must be approved to get a grade in the subject.

Compulsory participation

Compulsory participation in lessons, a minimum of 80 % attendance.  Approved/not approved.

Work assignments (AK)

Work assignments (AK): Two assignments will be given as work requirement during the semester. There may be both individual tasks and group tasks. Assessment expression: Approved/not approved.

Written school exam (SK/S)

School exam (SK/S): Individual written exam, 4 hours. Assessment terms A-F. Weighted 100 percent of final grade.

SAM1016 - Identity, community and participation - 7.5 credits
